What a Ductless Mini-Split Does
A mini-split is a type of heat pump where an outdoor unit is connected to one or more indoor air handlers by a small line set, with no ductwork in between. Each indoor head heats and cools its own space, and you control them independently.
Because there's no ductwork, a mini-split is often the best (sometimes the only) practical option for:
- Homes without existing ducts - including older homes and houses heated by a boiler or radiators, which have no ductwork to work with
- Additions, garages, workshops, sunrooms, and finished basements - spaces a central system was never sized to reach
- Room-by-room zoning - heat or cool the rooms you're using, at the temperature you want, without conditioning the whole house
- Spots that are always too hot or too cold - a bonus room over the garage, an upstairs that never cools down
Why Homeowners Choose Ductless
We Install Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi is our go-to for ductless. We install a lot of their systems every season, and we've found that they are reliable and their cold-climate performance holds up in Minnesota winters. We'll match the right configuration to your space, whether that's a single head for one room or a multi-zone setup for a whole home.
Ductless Services We Offer
Ductless Mini-Split Installation - New mini-split installation for additions, ductless homes, and hard-to-reach spaces, single-zone or multi-zone.
Ductless Mini-Split Repair - Diagnosing and fixing a mini-split that isn't heating, cooling, or running right.
We also clean and maintain mini-splits, which includes the indoor heads collect dust and, if neglected, can develop mold, so periodic cleaning matters more than people realize. Reach out, and we'll take care of it.
A Note on Air Quality
Because the indoor heads move air right in your living space, keeping them clean matters. AND it's also an easy place to improve your air. We install the Nu-Calgon Scorpion (UV light) and the iWave air ionizer on mini-split systems as well as traditional ones, both designed to cut down on mold, viruses, and bacteria. We currently include them with new system installs.
Ductless vs. a Full Heat Pump System
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump, just without ducts. If your home has ductwork and you're weighing a central, whole-home system, our heat pump pages cover that side. If you don't have ducts, or you want to zone specific spaces, ductless is usually the better path.
