When we install a system from scratch, we follow a defined process:

1. Load Calculation & Design
We perform a Manual J calculation to determine the exact cooling needs of your home based on square footage, window orientation, and insulation levels. This ensures your system isn't too small to keep up or too large to dehumidify.

2. Infrastructure & Routing
If your home doesn’t have existing ductwork, we map out the most unobtrusive paths for supply and return lines. For ductless systems, we determine the optimal zones to ensure every room receives even coverage.

3. Equipment Placement
We carefully select the location for your outdoor condenser and indoor evaporator coil. We focus on airflow, drainage, and vibration control.

4. Line Set & Electrical Integration
We run the copper refrigerant lines and high-voltage electrical, ensuring everything is encased in protective line-hide for a clean, professional look on the exterior of your home.

5. The Vacuum & Leak Test
Before adding refrigerant, we use a vacuum pump to remove all air and moisture from the lines. This is a critical step that many budget installers skip. It ensures your system stays clean and runs for 15+ years.

6. System Commissioning
Once the unit is powered on, we measure the Delta T (the temperature difference between intake and output) and check the static pressure to ensure the system is operating at its factory-rated efficiency.

Why is proper AC system design important for Minnesota's climate?

In Minnesota, air conditioners work incredibly hard for a relatively short window of time. Proper design is the difference between a home that is cold and clammy, and a home that is truly comfortable. There are a couple of considerations that must be balanced:

Sizing - If a system is oversized, it will cool the air so quickly that it shuts off before it has a chance to remove moisture. This leaves you with cold, damp air that leads to mold concerns and discomfort. Many installers simply look at your old unit and buy the same size. But if you’ve added new windows, better insulation, or an addition, that old size might be wrong.
Short cycling issues - A properly designed system should also avoid short-cycling (turning on and off rapidly), which is the #1 cause of premature compressor failure and high energy bills. Minnesota homes often have basements that stay freezing while the upper floors bake.
Airflow consistency - We design your system’s load balancing to ensure that airflow is distributed correctly, so you don't have to choose which floor of your house you want to be comfortable on.
Peak hot season - On the occasional 90-degree-plus days in July, a poorly designed system will fail to keep up. A properly designed load calculation (Manual J) ensures your unit is engineered to handle Minnesota’s peak summer design temperatures without any issues.
