Why a Heat Pump Needs More Maintenance, Not Less
A furnace works a few months a year. A central AC works a few months a year. A heat pump does both jobs year-round, so it accumulates more running hours and wear than either. A part that would last a decade in a seasonal system gets worked harder in a heat pump.
Skipping maintenance can create issues:
What We Check During a Heat Pump Tune-Up
A real heat pump tune-up looks at the things that actually cause failures on these systems:
- Refrigerant charge - checked and inspected for leaks
- Coils - outdoor and indoor coils cleaned and inspected.
- Defrost cycle - we confirm the defrost control is working, so the outdoor unit won't ice up when it gets cold
- Reversing valve - checked for proper operation switching between heating and cooling
- Auxiliary/backup heat - tested to make sure it engages when it should and shuts off when it shouldn't be running
- Electrical components - capacitors, contactors, and connections checked for wear
- Airflow, blower, and filter - cleaned/replaced and checked for proper airflow
- Thermostat - tested for accuracy
- Overall performance - we measure how it's actually running, in both modes
If we spot something heading toward failure, we tell you and let you decide. No pressure, no upsell.
When to Schedule It
Because a heat pump works in both seasons, the ideal is a check-up twice a year: (1) in spring before the cooling season and (2) in fall before the heating season. If twice a year isn't in the cards, at least once — timed heading into whichever season is hardest on your system around here (this is usually winter).
A Note on Cheap Tune-Ups
You'll see very low tune-up prices advertised around here. It's worth knowing what those usually are: a loss leader to get a technician in the door, where the real money comes from what they find once they're there.
We'd rather just do the work properly and be straight with you. We're not the cheapest HVAC company in the area, and we don't pretend to be. We send the people whose name is on the truck, check the system honestly, and tell you what we see. If your heat pump is running fine, we'll tell you it's running fine.
