Heat Pumps Fail Differently Than Other Systems
A heat pump does two jobs by moving heat and reversing direction with the season. That also means it has failure points that a furnace or AC simply doesn't have. These are the ones we see most:
Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Attention
- It's heating but not cooling, or cooling but not heating
- The outdoor unit is iced over in cold weather
- It runs constantly or short-cycles (on and off every few minutes)
- Weak airflow or air that isn't as warm/cool as it should be
- Energy bills jumped without a matching change in weather
- Strange noises like grinding, hissing, buzzing, or loud clanks
- The system won't turn on at all
Catching these early usually means a smaller repair. Heat pump problems tend to get worse and more expensive the longer they run.
What We Do on a Heat Pump Repair Call
- We come out and diagnose the issue. Our trucks are stocked to fix most heat pump problems on the first visit. We check the reversing valve, defrost control, refrigerant charge, coils, aux heat, and the electrical components.
- We tell you what we found and what it costs. Clear explanation, honest number, before any work happens.
- We make the repair and test it. If you give the go-ahead, we fix it and verify the system is heating and cooling properly before we leave.
Repair, or Time to Replace?
If your heat pump is aging and facing a significant repair, we'll give you honest numbers both ways rather than pushing you toward the bigger sale. A newer unit with a one-off failure is usually worth fixing. Whereas an old one needing an expensive part is often better replaced on your terms.

Ductless Mini-Split Repair
If the system giving you trouble is a ductless mini-split, that's a type of heat pump we cover on its own page: see ductless mini-split repair for that specifically.
