Repair It, or Replace It?
A newer unit with a one-off problem is usually worth repairing. But once a heat pump is old enough that repairs are stacking up, or if it needs a major, expensive part - you're often better off replacing it on your terms.
A Note from Brian
When you're replacing an old heat pump, my advice is don't just swap it like-for-like and move on. First, it's a chance to move up to a modern cold-climate system that actually performs. Heat pump technology has come a long way, and a lot of folks don't realize how far. Second, efficiency is the whole reason you have a heat pump, and an old one has lost a good chunk of it; you're paying for that every month whether you notice or not. And third, is to get the install right this time. A lot of heat pumps underperform because they were sized or set up wrong from the start, and replacing yours is the chance to fix that. I'll tell you honestly whether it's time to replace or whether a repair still makes sense. Sometimes a straight heat pump is the answer, sometimes a dual-fuel setup with a furnace fits your home better. It's always your call. I'll just give you the real numbers.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Heat Pump
It may be time for a new system if:
- Your heat pump is more than 10-15 years old
- Repairs are getting frequent or expensive
- It uses outdated R-22 refrigerant
- Heating or cooling is inconsistent
- Energy bills keep climbing even though nothing else changed
- The system is noisy or short-cycling
If a few of these sound familiar, it's worth having us take a look and lay out repair-versus-replace honestly.
Why Replacing an Old Heat Pump Is Worth It
A heat pump's entire value is efficiency, and that's exactly what degrades as it ages.
The upfront cost of a replacement is real, but so is the monthly cost of running an old, inefficient system. For a lot of homeowners, the new system pays part of its own way through lower bills.
The Right Install Matters More Than the Brand
The biggest factor in how well your new heat pump performs is whether it's sized and installed correctly. An oversized or poorly set-up system will disappoint you no matter how good the unit is.
When we replace a heat pump, we size it to your home, set it up to spec, and commission it to confirm it's running right. It's the same care that earned at least one of our technicians heat pump installation recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy. (More on how we install on our heat pump installation page.)
We install Mitsubishi (our go-to) and Trane, and we'll match the right system to your home rather than pushing whatever's on the truck.
What Replacing Your Heat Pump Involves
- We evaluate your current system and home. What you have, why it's failing, and whether the new unit should be sized differently than the old one (homes change — added insulation, windows, an addition).
- We give you clear options and pricing - Including whether a straight heat pump or a dual-fuel setup makes more sense for your home. No pressure. Ask about current offers and financing.
- We remove the old system and dispose of it responsibly.
- We install and commission the new one - Sized right, set up to spec, and tested in both heating and cooling before we leave.
