Repair or Replace?
This is the real question with an aging air conditioner, and the honest answer is: it depends. A newer unit with a one-off problem is usually worth repairing. But once a system gets old enough, repairs start stacking up, and at some point you're spending good money to keep a failing system alive.
A useful starting point is the $5,000 rule. You multiply the age of the unit by the cost of the repair. If the total exceeds $5,000, that money is usually better put toward a new system than into the old one.
(If you're mainly trying to decide whether a specific repair is worth it, our AC Repair page has a repair-vs-replace calculator to help you run the numbers.)
A Note from Brian
Most people don't drive a 20-year-old vehicle as their daily driver. It's not because it can't run, but because they don't want to be stranded when it finally quits. An old AC is the same. If yours is aging and you're weighing a big repair, it's often better to replace it on your schedule, when it's convenient, rather than in an emergency during the first 90-degree stretch of July. You'll also stop paying the "old system tax" of high energy bills every month in the meantime.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your AC
It may be time for a new system if:
- Your AC is more than 10–15 years old
- Repairs are getting frequent or expensive
- The system uses outdated R-22 refrigerant
- Cooling is uneven or some rooms never get comfortable
- Energy bills keep climbing even though nothing else has changed
- The unit is noisy, leaking, or short-cycling (turning on and off rapidly)
If a few of these sound familiar, it's worth having us take a look and give you honest numbers on repair versus replacement.
What Replacing Your AC Involves
Replacing an existing system is a different process compared to first-time installation. The ductwork and infrastructure are usually already there, so a lot of the job is about matching the right new unit to your home and cleanly swapping out the old one. Here's how our technicians handle it:
- Evaluate your current system and home. We look at what you have, why it's failing, and whether your existing ductwork and setup are in good shape. If your home has changed since the last unit went in (e.g. an addition, new windows, better insulation), the old size may no longer be right, and we'll size the new system accordingly rather than just matching the old one.
- Give you clear options and pricing. We recommend a right-sized, efficient replacement and lay out the costs. You can ask us about current offers and financing to make it easier on the budget.
- Remove the old unit. We pull and dispose of your old system.
- Install and connect the new system. We set the new unit, connect it to your existing infrastructure, and make sure everything is done right.
- Test and walk you through it. We commission the system, confirm it's running at spec, and show you how it works before we leave.
