When a Mini-Split Is the Right Install
Mini-splits solve problems central systems can't touch without a major project. They're the right call when you're:
- Adding conditioned space - an addition, a finished basement, a converted attic, a three-season porch
- Heating or cooling a home with no ductwork - older homes and boiler/radiator-heated homes have nowhere for central air to go; a mini-split doesn't need ducts
- Fixing one problem room - the bonus room over the garage, the upstairs that never cools, the office that's always freezing
- Conditioning a garage, shop, or outbuilding
- Zoning - putting comfort where you want it, at the temperature you want, without conditioning the whole house
If your home has ductwork and you're after a whole-home system, a central heat pump may be the better fit. Check out our heat pump installation page. For everything ductless, you're in the right place.
Single-Zone or Multi-Zone?
A big part of getting a mini-split right is deciding how many indoor heads you need and where they go:
We'll walk your space with you, figure out how many zones actually make sense, and size the system to the load. Not sure if a furnace is what you have? A lot of homes in this area run hot water boilers or heat pumps instead. We service all of them, see our heating services overview.
Why the Install Is Quick and Clean
This is one of the best things about ductless, and it surprises people: installing a mini-split is nowhere near the disruption of retrofitting central air.
Most of the work happens outside. Inside, it comes down to mounting the indoor head and a small penetration through the wall for the line set that connects it to the outdoor unit. There's no tearing open ceilings, no running ductwork through closets, no multi-week project. For a lot of installs, we're in and out with minimal mess and a room that's comfortable the same day.
(Timeframe depends on how many zones you're putting in. A single head is quick, whereas a multi-zone whole-home system takes longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front.)
How We Install a Mini-Split
- Assessment. We look at the space, the load, and where the indoor heads and outdoor unit should go for performance and for how it'll look.
- System selection. We match you to the right Mitsubishi system and configuration for the space and your goals.
- Placement and mounting. Indoor heads positioned for even, comfortable airflow. We also set up the outdoor unit for best airflow and drainage.
- Line set and connection. The refrigerant and electrical lines run cleanly, with the exterior line-hide kept neat.
- Vacuum, charge, and commissioning. We evacuate the lines, charge the system properly, and verify it's running right in both heating and cooling before we leave. Doing this step correctly is a big part of why a system lasts.
We Install Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi is our go-to for ductless, and it's what we know best. Their mini-splits are reliable, efficient, quiet, and their cold-climate models perform in Minnesota winters. We'll match the right configuration to your space rather than pushing a one-size unit.
