Signs It's Time to Replace Your Furnace
A furnace usually gives you warning before it quits for good. It may be time to replace if:
- It's 20 years old or more - it's common for us to find furnaces running 20-25 years, sometimes the original unit the home was built with. They still fire, but they're a fraction as efficient as a modern system and parts get harder to find.
- Repairs are getting frequent or expensive - you're calling for service most winters
- Energy bills keep climbing even though the weather and your usage haven't changed
- Uneven heating or cold spots - the furnace can't keep the whole house comfortable anymore
- Short-cycling - firing and shutting off repeatedly, often a sign of an oversized or failing system
- A cracked heat exchanger - this one isn't optional. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide, and you'll need to replace the unit.
Repair or Replace?
If your furnace is aging and facing a significant repair, that's a real decision. We can help you lay out repair-versus-replace honestly rather than pushing you toward the bigger sale. Sometimes a newer furnace with a one-off problem is worth fixing. Sometimes an old unit needing an expensive part is money better spent on a system you can count on.
Our furnace services page goes deeper on how we think about that decision. And if you're not sure whether your furnace even needs replacing yet, furnace repair is the place to start.
What Replacing Your Furnace Involves
Replacing an existing furnace is different from a first-time installation. The ductwork and setup are usually already there, so the job is about matching the right new furnace to your home and cleanly swapping out the old one.
- We evaluate your current system and home. What you have, why it's failing, and whether your existing ductwork is in good shape.
- We size the new furnace to the home as it is now. Right-sizing the future unit to the space is what makes a new system run efficiently.
- We remove the old furnace and dispose of it.
- We install and connect the new one - ductwork, gas and electrical, and venting.
- We test and commission it. Combustion, venting, and safety checked. We confirm it's heating properly before we leave.
(Putting forced-air heat into a home that doesn't have a furnace yet? That's a first-time furnace installation - a different job.)
Why Replace With a Modern Furnace?
- Lower heating bills - a new high-efficiency furnace does the same job on less fuel
- Consistent, even heat without the cold spots an aging system develops
- Quieter, more reliable operation
- A fresh manufacturer warranty and years of dependable service
- Safer - a new unit with a sound heat exchanger, properly vented
The upfront cost is real, but so is the monthly cost of running an old, inefficient furnace. For a lot of homeowners, the new system pays part of its own way.
